Developmental Specialist

Reports To:

Job Purpose:

Delivers a learning through play educational program to the child by planning and implementing activities and routines which supports; the child's individual educational plan, family needs, the consultants' direction and The GRIT Program inclusive model.

Job Requirements:

  • Education: Diploma in Rehabilitation Services or Early Childhood Development or related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of six months work experience with children with special needs, preferably children of preschool age.
  • Current Certification in Child CPR.
  • Criminal Record Clearance and Child Welfare Clearance.
  • Automobile Insurance/ Drivers Abstract in accordance with Program policy.
  • Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop activities and routines to meet the child's Individual Program plan by following the child's lead, integrating learning techniques suggested by the consultants, and preparing instructional materials.
  • Maintain the integrity of the family by using interpersonal communication skills to empower the family, providing parental relief and honoring the oath of confidentiality.
  • Create opportunities for inclusion by accessing and accompanying the child to community programs and/or school, modeling inclusive techniques at home and in the community and maintaining a valid driver's license.
  • Maintain child growth records by collecting data in accordance to GRIT Student Evaluation Policy and participating in the child’s program review.
  • Maintain the program binder by preparing and storing the Daily Schedule of Activities and routines, child collected data, anecdotal accounts and consultant visit sheets.
  • Contribute to a trans-disciplinary team by participating in meetings and home visits and integrating suggestions from team members into the Individual Program Plan.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending orientation, Growth and Development days, GRIT conference and other courses pertinent to the job.
  • Maintain legal requirements by acquiring written parental authorization for: specific non-educational procedures and administering medications to the child.
  • Maintains body joints and back by complying with GRIT policy on lifting techniques of children and equipment.
  • Participate in performance appraisal reviews in accordance with Program policy.
  • Accommodate practicum students and other visitors to the program as requested.
